Former England professional footballer, Rio Ferdinand has received an honourary doctor of letters by London South Bank University (LSBU).
He stated that he is proud to be presented with such honor, stated that he never thought anything of such would be possible growing up in his community.
Rio said, "growing up in my community, I never thought anything like this would be possible… we were made to feel there was a ceiling or to stay in your box. I hope it inspires young people to believe & to have a dream (like all young people should).. we need to continue to learn, to help communities and to break down the barriers that too many people face in their lives. Without my parents drive & ethos none of this would be possible.
"Setting up the Rio Ferdinand Foundation gave us an opportunity to empower young people to be built up and to then become the inspirational leaders within their communities - with the backing of corporate companies offering opportunities to those that come through the foundation."
He thanked everyone at LSBU for their warm welcome, wishing all the graduates success.
"Never forget the impact you can have on an individual," Rio added.
