Mentally challenged woman gives birth to baby girl around Mile 4 hospital axis in Ebonyi state

A mentally challenged woman has given birth to a baby girl around Mile 4 hospital axis, in Ebonyi state.

This was made known by Sampson Oko Nweke, chairman of non-governmental organisation, HURIDE, disclosing that the NGO got a call from a good Samaritan, Nwakpu Cosmas Aluma, reporting the case, on Friday night, November 10, 2021.

HURIDE, being a member of the Gender Based Violence (GBV) taskforce in Ebonyi state, contacted the GBV taskforce coordinator, Barr FaithVin Nwancho. Its team arrived at the spot in company of a special detachment from Kpirikpiri police station.

Nweke said the baby and the mother were taken to the newborn unit of the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki  (AE-FUTHA1), where they are receiving medical attention.

He, however, disclosed that the social welfare department of the hospital is nothing to write home about, as it is not working at all.

The chairman stated that the police and the GBV taskforce were financially sustaining the hospital care and treatment of the baby and her mother.

He called on the state ministry of women affairs, who is also a member of the GBV taskforce, to step into the matter.
