The management of Dowen College has debunks claims as false that one of their student, Sylvester Oromoni, died due to the beating he got from fellow students for refusing to join a cult.
It can be recalled that a twitter user who claimed to be the cousin of the deceased had narrated that his cousin mentioned 5 names of bullying him before dying. He also accused the school of lying about what led to his death.
Reacting to the accusations, the school management released a statement, stating that on 21st November, 2021, one of the hostel parents reported to them that Sylvester was injured while playing football, which the resident registered nurse immediate administered first aid on him and after he expressed relief, was allowed to return to his hostel room.
The management said that the next day, on November 22, Sylvester complained of some pain in his hip at the sick bay, and the doctor examined him and prescribed Ibrofen for the pain, while the nurse massage his leg, after which Sylvester said he felt a bit better.
The resident doctor called the mother of Sylvester and reported the incident to her, requesting that she comes pick him up so that he could get further medical attention. The mother said that she wasn't in Lagos, saying that the guardian would come pick him up.
The guardian picked Sylvester from the school on November 23, and took him for X-ray, which showed that no part of his body was broken or injured, and also informed the school management, who had been checking-in on the progress of Sylvester.
Reacting to the accusations made by the self-acclaimed cousin of the deceased, the school management said it is shocked by the accusations and had commenced investigations and invited the students mentioned for interview. Guardian to Sylvester was also present during some of the investigations.
After the investigations, the school management revealed that nothing of such happened, saying that there were no report by Sylvester himself, his sister who is also a student or any other students, perfects, house parents, medical staff or any management staff about any fighting or bullying incident.
The school management said they have a cordial relationship with the Oromoni family as Sylvester is the fifth child of the family, that the College had train, including his elder sister who is currently a student of the school.
Furthermore, the management expressed sadness on the death of Sylvester, and sympathied with family, relatives, friends and classmates.
