Court grants cleric Gbenga Filani bail

Cleric, Gbenga Filani who was accused of raping a 5-month-old pregnant woman, Bukola, has been granted bail by a magistrate court sitting in Akure, Ondo state.

It could be recalled that the pregnant lady accused Filani of raping her in his church, while conducting a delivery section.

Filani who was arraigned in Court on a two count  charge bordering on rape and assault, was granted bail on the sum of five hundred and fifty thousand naira (N550,000), along with two sureties in like sum that must deposit two passports photographs and must be resident in the court's jurisdiction.

Chief magistrate, Damilola Sekoni granted Filani bail on the ground that the prosecutor failed to prove the allegation beyond reasonable doubt that he committed the offence.

Lawyer to the accused, Adelanke Akinrata asked the court to grant him bail pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), arguing that there was no evidence before the court to link the accused with the alleged offence.

The case has now been transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution for advice while the court adjourned its sitting to 14 January, 2022 for the review of the charges.
