AIG Garba Umar emerges INTERPOL Vice President (Africa)


The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Garba Umar has emerged the duly elected Vice President (Africa) and Executive Committee Member of the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO) - INTERPOL.

This was disclosed by Force public relations officer, CP Frank Mba, stating that AIG Garba was elected on Thursday, November 25,2021, in the 89th INTERPOL GENERAL ASSEMBLY,  which was held at the Halic Congress Hall, Istanbul, Turkey

Mba noted that the Assembly which was attended by 470 police chiefs, ministers and senior law enforcement officials from the 195 INTERPOL member countries, seeks to identify areas where the organization can reinforce the global security architecture and enhance collaboration against national and transnational crimes.

AIG Garba has over thirty years of policing experience both at national and international levels.

He pulled the highest number of votes in the elections, and would be on appointment through a period of three years, and is expected to bring his wealth of experience to bear in coordinating INTERPOL operations.

Nigeria's delegation to the Assembly was led by Hon. Minister of Police affairs, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, supported by IGP Usman Alkali. 

Other members of the delegation include, Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, and the Chief of Naval staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, who was represented by the Naval Provost Marshal.
