Gunmen attacks Abolongo custodial centre, frees inmates awaiting trail

A large number of gunmen attacked the Abolongo Custodial Centre, Oyo state, at 10:00 pm, on October 22, 2021.

A statement by media adviser to the minister of interior, Sola Fasure, stated that the gunmen were engaged to a gun duel by the Armed squad unit members of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and other security agencies on guard at the facility, which lasted for 20 minutes before they were overpowered.

The attackers used grenades and other explosives ro gain access into the awaiting trail section of the facility and set free many of the awaiting trail inmates, but left other sections of the facility untouched.

Fasure disclosed that the controller general of the NCS is on the issue, while the minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has been briefed on the attack.

Aregbesola assured members of the public to go about their normal businesses as the situation is under control, urging them to report any suspicious movement or any sign of the escaped inmates and the gunmenin and around the vicinity to the nearest security post around them.

Also, the statement revealed that security agencies are on the trail of the escaped inmates, as some returned voluntarily.

It urged those on the run to turn themselves in, as escape from lawful custody is a serious offense. The full weight of the law will be brought on them when arrested!
