Permanent secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Shuaib Belgore has stated that Nigerians needs to join in guaranteeing fire safety and fire fighting shouldn't be left in the hands of professional firefighters alone. This was disclosed by in statement issued by Director press, Lere-Adams Blessing, stating that the permanent secretary made this call at the 11th technical session of permanent secretary, ministry of Interior and permanent secretaries supervising state fire services with the theme: Fire Safety Management: An imperative for National Security, in Jos, Plateau state. Dr. Belgore said fire safety management is and ought to be a collective responsibility as a people and not to be left to professional firefighters alone, adding that the role of all is to observe basic precautionary rules that will prevent and protect against preventable fire outbreaks. While noting that the best approach of fire safety management would lead to protection of life and property by preventing the outbreak of preventable fire incidents, He stated that there is the need for inclusion ANS installation of active and passive fire safety features in buildings and structures so as to serve as security check against arsonists and secure valuables from complete destruction. The permanent secretary maintained that there is the need to further strengthen the fire service and provide security against unnecessary loss of lives and properties, saying, The Federal Fire Service requires a very strong and robust legislation to enable it perform its statutory responsibility of protection of lives and property from wanton destruction by fire.
