The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has spoken out against the way the Nigerian government is handling the situation on the payment of its members, stating that it is the university students that would suffer and not the ASUU members. The Union disclosed that the agreement which was reached in December was brokered by the Minister of labour and employment, and it was agreed that meetings will be held from time to time to look at issues. We met in May and raised all these issues with the Accountant-General’s Office present at the meeting. They tried to deny the fact that some of our members are being owed. And we were able to prove with available data that they were lying and they accepted and agreed to implement. If any of our members enroll in IPPIS today, officials from the office of the AGF will pay you the next day, which means that what they are doing is deliberate, ASUU stated. The Union disclosed that complete data of members have been sent more on frequent occasion but yet the members are still not paid. But if any of its members decide to register, they will be paid all their arrears, describing it as a deliberate attempt. ASUU said, They even came last month to request for data and we sent to them. As we speak, more than 1000 of our members are still being owed 16 months. Bursars of each university have sent their documentation and all corrections to the office of the Accountant-General, yet they are not paying our members. The Union maintained that it is very unfortunate that the FG is trying to kill the university system because of personal reasons, revealing that they will meet, get reports from all branches, get all available data and will take the next action. ASUU called on well-meaning Nigerians to advise those responsible that such path will force them to take very drastic measures.
