Unless you are looking at setting with anything life throws at you, then you are good; if otherwise your target would centered on how you are able to set the way your future will turn out. To do this you have to know the rules to accomplishing this task:
1. Learn from the past: There is no greater teacher than your past because through it you get to discover what you should have done, the mistakes you have made, opportunities you missed etc. It is a whole learning process when it comes to memorise from the past. It is from your past that you are able to gain experience, which would help you deal with your future.
Experience is the best teacher, only when you see it as a means through which you can gain knowledge and handle future occurance. Use your past to make your future better, let it be what guides you in taking actions and making decisions.
2. Set important and detailed goals: Make your goals to be just as important and relevant as to what you want to accomplish. Do not just set them, also ensure that you work towards accomplishing them.
3. Control your present life: Though you might have made plans for you future, you still have your present life to live. You have to set it in accordance to your future goal, by so doing take charge of the present. It is like a sailing ship - before the ship set for sail, it has a destination, therefore it must set it's course to the direction of its destination. It doesn't matter how long it gets there, but that it would get there eventually.
To be who you want to be, what you want to be, and have what you want; you have to set your sail just like the ship to your destination without changing course, no matter what.
