This question seems awkward because you get to ask yourself - how can being intelligent be pointless - and since it is what makes everyone crazes for, what makes being intelligence pointless?
To answer this question let's use an example, have you ever imagined how if someone buys a car and doesn't know how to drive it or doesn't have a driver to help in driving the car, this makes having the car become pointless and a waste.
That is how intelligence can become pointless; it needs a driver to make it not be of waste, but it's not the individual because he or she already owns the intelligence. What becomes the driver is 'ambition', your ambition is the drive, it is what helps you put that intelligence to good use.
Ambition is an individual's strong desire to achieve something, determination to be something or attain something. With it, one's intelligence is given the focus to achieve something, and the intelligence is given the task to attain that thing. Without it, one's intelligence remains dormant and not put to full use.
Intelligence without ambition is like a car without a driver, you need it!
